The 65th Armored Field Artillery Battalion,
a company of chemical mortars, 81mm mortars
and machine guns of the 327th’s 2d
Battalion, and 50-caliber machine guns
manned by two companies of the 237th
Engineer Battalion. Company C of the 1st
Battalion, 327th, crossed the Douve at 0145
that night (June 9-10). Casualties from
enemy fire were very light but several dozen
casualties occurred just after the crossing
due to explosions. Regimental officers
attributed these losses to short rounds from
the chemical mortars; General McAuliffe, who
was present coordinating the artillery fire
plan, identified the explosions as German
mines. |

The 65th Armored Field Artillery Battalion,
a company of chemical mortars, 81mm mortars
and machine guns of the 327th’s 2d
Battalion, and 50-caliber machine guns
manned by two companies of the 237th
Engineer Battalion. Company C of the 1st
Battalion, 327th, crossed the Douve at 0145
that night (June 9-10). Casualties from
enemy fire were very light but several dozen
casualties occurred just after the crossing
due to explosions. Regimental officers
attributed these losses to short rounds from
the chemical mortars; General McAuliffe, who
was present coordinating the artillery fire
plan, identified the explosions as German
mines. |
